Feature film vs Short film

In class we looked at the short film, The Fly (2014) by director Olly Williams featuring Jack Doolan. In terms of narrative structure it seems to follow a fairly conventional 3-part structure consisting of a beginning middle and end. The man first see's the fly and begins by trying to swat it away, showing fairly normal behaviour. As the film progresses however, the man shows erratic and violent behaviour in stabbing the airbag and shooting the car, but the audience finds humour in the irrelevance of the fly. This contains elements of a dark humour as the film reaches it's most intense climax. The ending of the film consists of police sirens, alerting the failure of the bank robbery as the protagonist's partner's in crime appear in the film for the first time. As an audience, we are able to see a range of emotions progress in the protagonist despite the short duration of the film, as the character shifts from feelings of anger to regret and realisation at what he has done.

For our feature film, we looked at various scenes from Baby Driver (2017) by director Edgar Wright. In comparison to our short film, Baby Driver has a far longer duration and therefore the structure of the film is more spread out as we learn and see more of the protagonists emotions and background story. Unlike in The Fly, we are able to learn much more about the main character's background through the interaction of other character's such as shown in the conversations between Bats and his boss. The audience is able to gain a clearer understanding behind their actions, unlike my personal immediate reaction to The Fly which shocked me by the character's erratic behaviour. We also looked at the post-heist diner scene, and I noticed how the feature film gave more scope to unveil multiple dimensions of Baby's character. For example, we see the protagonist take a much more active role outside of the car when he stops Bats from pulling a gun on his love interest.

In The Fly, there is a clear structure, however the short duration tends to limit the complexity of the film and fails to show much understanding of the character. Furthermore, there is no dialogue in the short film which limits our knowledge as we fail to see interactions with other characters.
